Top 5 Places to Propose in Rome

1. Trevi Fountain

Almost every square in the city of Rome is adorned with a fabulous fountain at its center, and these fountains are considered to be works of art. The Trevi Fountain is probably the most famous as it’s an over the top masterpiece of baroque design and attracts millions of tourists every year. It’s a tradition for visitors to toss a coin into the fountain and then make a wish. You could use this tradition to begin your proposal. Most people close their eyes when they are making a wish so wouldn’t it be cute if you were down on one knee when your girl opened her eyes? As it’s usually really busy, the best time to go to the Fontana di Trevi is after 10 o’clock at night. Seasonally, Rome is perfect in March and April as it’s much quieter and not too hot.

The following video is a great example of a Trevi Fountain proposal, so be sure to take some tips from it!

2. The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are located in an upmarket area of the city center and are two minutes away from several designer boutiques. The steps lead to the Piazza Di Spagna with the Church of Trinitadei Monti which is famous for its twin towers that seem to dominate the skyline. The church was built in 1502 by Louis VII so you can really get a sense of the history when you’re climbing the steps. The Spanish Steps do get extremely crowded during the long hot summer days so a proposal would be much better after the sun has set, or even better at midnight when it’s very quiet.

Watch this proposal by way of example if you’re considering the Spanish Steps for your proposal location as you can clearly see they make for a great setting!

3. Piazza San Pietro

Also known as St Peter’s Square, this is the grand piazza which fronts the famous basilica. It’s a very popular gathering point for tourists and is easily reached from the long boulevard via Della Conciliazione. The square was redesigned between 1656 and 1667, under the instructions of Pope Alexander VII so that as many people as possible had the opportunity to see the pope giving his blessing. It’s a stunning place to visit even if you’re not particularly religious, but if you are then you will appreciate the atmosphere even more.

4. Sistine Chapel, the Vatican

If you book well in advance, you can take your girlfriend on a tour of the Vatican’s Sistine chapel. These tours are kept to a maximum of ten people and allow tourists to see secret rooms like the Niccoline Chapel, the Room of Gold and Raphael’s rooms. By ordering your tickets online you can skip the long queues and take advantage of a romantic, after-hours private viewing of the magnificent Sistine chapel. Your girlfriend cannot fail to be amazed at the ceiling designed by Michelangelo and will feel a sense of excitement as you tour along the secret passages and hidden corridors. If that wasn’t enough, there are also interesting galleries to view such as the gallery of Candelabra and the Gallery of Tapestries. The historical beauty that you will encounter on this tour will create a proposal that she will appreciate and cherish forever.

5. Ponte Sant’Angelo

Again, this part of Rome featured in ‘Roman Holiday’ and when you see it with your own eyes you will soon realize why it’s so popular. It’s a bridge across the Tiber River which leads from the center of Rome to the Castle Sant’Angelo which was once Hadrian’s Tomb. There are no vehicles allowed which makes it a really popular place for couples to hang out. Even teenage couples are attracted by this magical bridge that is lined by breathtaking statues of Angels. It’s easy to get to by foot or you can get a taxi if it’s late at night. From the bridge, you can clearly see St Peter’s Basilica which is a sight to behold during the hours of darkness.

Places To Propose In Rome Conclusion

Rome is probably one of the most perfect destinations to pop the question because every lady likes romance and this city certainly offers this in spades. Although there are lots of things to see in Rome, a long weekend is more than enough time to see the main tourist’s attractions and some hotels are relatively cheap. The food is to die for and so what better way of toasting your engagement than with an authentic Italian meal? Seriously you can’t go wrong here.
